This mushroom - thought to be a specimen of Clathrus archeri, or “Devil’s Fingers” - takes the cake for being the strangest and creepiest specimen of a fungus looking like something else. It looks like a cold, dead hand reaching out to pull the rest of the zombie body out of the earth. Those even look like tattered sleeves down by the wrists of the hands.
The Amazing Underwater Forest of Lake Kaindy
What makes Lake Kaindy truly remarkable is that it contains an underwater forest. Visible on the lakes surface are the tall, dried-out tops of submerged Spruce trees that rise above the water’s surface like the masts of sunken ships. They are the only sign of the amazing frozen forest below the water’s surface.
The water is so cold (even in summer the temperature does not exceed 6 degrees) that the pine needles remain on the trees, even after a hundred years of being submerged. During the winter, the lake freezes and becomes a popular spot for ice diving.
The lake is 400 meters long and is located in Kazakhstan’s portion of the Tian Shan Mountains, about 129 km from the city of Almaty. The lake was created after an earthquake in 1911 triggered a large landslide blocking the gorge and forming a natural dam.
Holy crap.

so disgusting. how dare you compare the hamas to the ezln. didn’t know that the ezln was a group of reactionary, fundamentally religious, holocaust denying, anti-semitic, suicide bombing scum. this makes me so sad.

they saw the chance
they took the chance
“Tjis is it, this is why you went to journalism school. At last.”
Step One: You can’t
fine argument for justifying every kind of bullshit behavior. “but capitalism is the evil behind all that” - sure it is, but that doesn’t mean there is no difference between buying books in a small local leftwing bookstore or buying at a huge book chain. or imagine two men sitting next to each other on a bench. one is an obviously rich man, the other one is a homeless person asking for food. if you had a little spare change, who would you give it to? probably to the homeless man. and here’s the point: even if you won’t abolish homelessness or change the system, you will still improve the situation of the man for a short period of time. there isn’t only black and white in capitalism. while fighting against capitalism/for social change, we can still try to not consume like ignorant assholes.

What the city is missing: Thierry Cohen photographs cityscapes and then photographs deserts at night, combing the two to show us what our cities would look like with the lights off. The stars are not enhanced, they are actual photos from relative latitudes that would expose the same starry sky view if it weren’t for light pollution. Click on each photo to see which city it is.
Light pollution and pollution in general
My eye caught a dark form lying on the river bottom. It took me a few moments to comprehend what I had stumbled upon. Lying peacefully in the shallow waters of the river, only a few meters from shore, was a full-grown cougar. The contrast between the serenity of the scene I was witnessing and what must have played out here in the cougar’s final moments made me shiver. It was the first shiver of many, as I stripped down and waded out into the icy water to get this shot. x
